Jumbo flats often have quite the appeal, especially for larger families. These units range between 1,500 and over 2,000 square feet and are huge by HDB standards, not to mention rare.

One couple with three young kids was drawn to this 1,800-square-foot Jumbo flat in Yishun, and engaged Zhuo Jinhai of Design Zage to transform the place into a bright and cheery home – one purpose-built to fit their needs.

The designer broke down most of the non-structural walls to re-orientate the unit, turning it from a five-room flat with an enclosed kitchen into a four-room flat with an open-concept cooking/entertaining space. As part of the transformation, the original master bedroom was made into a shared kid’s room for the couple’s three boys. It even has space for a play zone.

The family doesn’t watch much television, and the TV screen can be neatly hidden behind moveable panels when needed. They read a lot, so the designer has thoughtfully created a modular bookcase with adjustable shelves. When the panels are moved, the coloured backing also changes.

The newly configured kitchen features a dry and wet zone, with a sliding glass panel to keep out cooking fumes while maintaining the open views and the Jumbo flat’s bright and airy vibe.

A vertical garden of artificial plants hides a semi-private nook, offering yet more corners for individual members of the family to relax and have some personal time to themselves.

There’s a dedicated study, which the couple shares when working from home. Their master bedroom has an enlarged, ‘open-concept’ bathroom that’s separated from the sleeping area by full-height glass panels. Blinds can be drawn for privacy.

The kid’s bathroom was also enlarged to make it more functional and suitable for use by the children. All three bathrooms in the unit feature a different aesthetic, making each distinctive, and lending a touch of fun to this Jumbo home.
