Interior design firm Carpenters did away with restrictive enclosed spaces in the renovation of this apartment. They also curated a clever material palette and sleek furniture selection. The result is a contemporary Scandinavian aesthetic that is open and airy, with fuss-free maintainability for a family of five.

It’s magical how removing a wall and opening a previously enclosed space can instantly make a home look and feel more spacious. Upon entering the condo, one is presented with an airy, contemporary open-concept. The Carpenters design team hacked the unit’s existing kitchen wall to create an open kitchen concept that visually unites the living and dining areas.

The living area enjoys a view of the open kitchen area. Conversations can continue while cooking, setting the table and watching television. The bar counter area features warm-toned recessed lights and wood-finish EDL laminates, while the grey finish of the bar counter complements the dark grey of the Hafary tiles on the living room wall.

A Scandinavian-inspired furniture selection rounds off the home’s contemporary open-concept aesthetic. A tiered coffee table in white sits at the centre of the sun-drenched living room, while a comfy leather armchair and sofa are placed around it. Uniting the colour palette is the plush rug, which features an abstract pattern in pastel shades.

This compact kitchen has everything within reach. Need a recipe? The overhead bookshelves are within easy reach. Kitchen utensils? The grey cabinets and drawers store everything neatly. Wine? The wine fridge is just at the corner. What about someone to help? Simply call out – the kitchen overlooks the study, living and dining area, making it the ultimate spot for multitasking.

The same everything-within-reach concept was also applied to create an efficient study. In one of the children’s studies, for example, stationery, books and memorabilia are all placed within reach from the task chair. The design team also installed a writeable surface on the wall should inspiration strike or boredom kick in; the child can just scribble or doodle on the wall with no permanent damage done!

Low maintainability is especially paramount in a home with three children. The designers curated the finishes in this home to achieve that clean-cut, contemporary look without having to worry about constant maintenance. In the master bedroom, a combination of laminates from EDL, wallpaper from Wallhub, Philippe Stark’s Ghost plastic chair from Kartell and vinyl from Evorich creates a sleek and durable space.

The no-fuss low-maintenance material palette also applies in the bathroom. Here, Hafary tiles create the look and feel of natural stone tiles while requiring minimal upkeep. Black quartz countertop from Belluz adds a touch of contrast. Meanwhile, recessed lights installed on the cabinet above the washbasin provide illumination without the glare, facilitating gentle bathroom lighting at night.
