Making bold colour choices can be risky, but for this resale condo in the East, its eye-popping combination of shades has proven to be a winning move for its adventurous homeowners. The home is designed by Pamela Ong, Director at Third Avenue Studio, who has transformed its previously safe-looking modern interior into an eclectic haven. Revealing how the unconventional colour scheme came to be, she says: “The homeowners had a pretty detailed design brief that placed emphasis on the function and colour scheme of the kitchen, and a strong preference for yellow and blue hues. I was even invited to view the clients’ previous place to get a better idea of what they liked.”
With her intuitive sense of colour and form, Pamela has expertly paired colours and materials to create a statement-making kitchen. Whimsical patterns deck the backsplash and cabinetry, giving off an air of playful exuberance.
The designer had spent some time deliberating about painting the cabinet doors in quirky patterns. She says: “With these cabinet doors made of raw wood panels, you get a patchy appearance, gaps and uneven woodgrains. However, in this end we decided that rather than a flawless finish, these imperfections were what we are looking for. The result is a work of art with characterful painted details.”
The handpainted finishes are matched with a scallop-shape tiled backsplash, and textured glass for the cabinet doors. The bold design is balanced with stainless steel countertops and the existing black large-format floor tiles in the kitchen and living area.
Decked in similarly playful scallop patterns, this counter comes with the bonus function of mobility. The homeowners can move it away to create more room when needed, and for easier maintenance.
The living area is outfitted with full-height cabinetry and shelves to display the homeowners’ favourite ornaments and knickknacks, and it showcases their love of vintage items.
Rattan panels with curved trimmings make a strong and nostalgic design statement. Both ends of the cabinet are accented by Panalogue wallpaper bearing dried pressed flower motifs, and serve as cosy corners for display shelving and seating.
To give the homeowners’ impressive teapot collection pride of place in the home, Pamela has removed the storeroom and turned its entrance into a spectacular display for their vintage teapots.
The remaining storeroom space has merged with the master bedroom to accommodate a walk-in wardrobe. Enclosing the new wardrobe are barnyard-style sliding doors in etched glass sporting Peranakan-inspired motifs.
A similar treatment of etched glass panels can be found on the bedroom doors. Pamela also designed swing-out panels at the bottom of the doors as pet access for the homeowners’ two cats.
The master bathroom is a pastel dream with ice cream-style tiles giving the walls an iridescent sheen. The palette of soft hues is played up with a glass sink bowl in a jewel tone and blue coloured cabinets. The Peanuts character Snoopy even makes an appearance as a custom-made LED neon light.
While the dry bathroom area features vibrant details like the sink countertop in terrazzo prints, the wet zone is decidedly pared-back with its stone-look tiles in a practical shade of neutral grey.
An indulgence of colour also finds its way into the common bathroom, which features a soothing gradient of hexagonal wall tiles. Here, mismatched vintage wall hooks and a fluted sink inject elements of playfulness into the ombre setting.
With its many interesting focal points, this condo has been specifically designed to evoke joyful emotions and put the homeowners in a great mood. “To be honest, this home is not your usual wabi-sabi or modern-themed living space, as every corner has a feature”, says Pamela. “It keeps your eyes busy and with all these vibrant colours and accents, it is simply fascinating.”
