The designers from Ethereall have warmed up the modern contemporary style with rustic farmhouse design influences.

For this home belonging to a fun-loving and outdoorsy couple, the designers from Ethereall were briefed to put together a farmhouse theme. It is especially prominent in the open cookspace with ceiling beams clad in wood-effect laminates and other barnyard-style details like cabinet doors with trimmings and brass handles. Say the designers: “We also chose a marble-patterned quartz countertop with a 50mm drop edge profile to bring out the theme.”
The wooden beams serve more than just an aesthetic purpose to demarcate the cookspace. Say the designers: “The initial kitchen ceiling was a lot lower than the living room’s ceiling as there is hidden piping in the former.” To mask the unsightly pipes, they turned to using these wooden beams to conceal the larger piping. They add: “We then removed the previous false ceilings so that the kitchen looks much bigger with the higher ceiling height.”
Besides the farmyard aesthetic, the renovation entailed hacking works to open up the kitchen and to fit a breakfast island counter between the kitchen and dining area. This resulted in one big and free-flowing communal space brimming with rustic cottage vibes.
Wooden ceiling beams also make an appearance in the whitewashed master bedroom and these rustic textures turn the otherwise stark-looking room into a cosy retreat. It is complemented by a sliding barn door of similar wood-effect textures, which leads into the en-suite bathroom.
His-and-hers sinks add a touch of luxury to the master bathroom, which follows a more eclectic theme. The striking pairing of blue and white subway tiles creates a strong colour contrast. To play up the visual drama, Spanish-patterned floor tiles in blue usher in unique textures.
A moody shade anchors the study and this works well as a modern focal point for this space of contemplation. The room comes with bay windows that bring an added dimension to the space as well as a cottage-inspired feel that resonates well with the ongoing farmhouse theme. With daylight enhancing the airy and lofty ambience, the homeowners can work, chill or cosy up with their pet French bulldog.
