This home is filled with cherished and memory-filled objects, and furnishings that exude comfort rather than ones that display the latest trend.

The owner, who lives alone, wanted an individualistic home that reflected her personality, and that could be flexible to take her through different seasons in life. To add additional layers to the complex brief, it had to be conducive for the entrepreneur’s home based facial business, and cater to an array of hobbies and interests, including thread work like sewing and knitting, as well as gardening.

Interior designer Jun Lee from Authors Interior & Styling shares how these requirements led them down the path of boho design. “The characteristics of bohemian interior design are defined by untrammelled layers of patterns, textures and colours. The core of the bohemian aesthetics is that it is personal and relaxed, which reflects the design brief in terms of flexibility, personality and lifestyle,” says the designer.

As is typical of most three-room resale flats, the unit’s original layout was mainly closed up and narrow. Notably too, there was a lack of natural light coming into the master bedroom as the space was west facing.

This was resolved by replacing a portion of the bedroom wall with a large glass window that lets more light filter into the space. A curtain can be drawn for privacy. “It also creates a design feature, which can be enjoyed both in the living area and main bedroom,” Jun adds.

While some of the mainstay furniture pieces are store bought, many other objects and furnishings that grace the home are from the owner’s travels abroad and reflect her passions and interests.

The wall between the living area and kitchen has been demolished, opening up the flat further and allowing natural light to penetrate into the deepest recesses of the home. The white walls are the perfect canvas to tie together different styles, colours and patterns in true boho style. Retro objects sit alongside more contemporary designs to create a home that is bright and fresh, and in step with the times.

Given the owner’s love for plants, potted and hanging greens take their place in different corners of the home, with a special ledge made just for them in the bathroom. It’s a deeply personal home, and true to the spirit of boho living.
