An HDB flat with pink walls and terrazzo

While many Singaporean homeowners default to plain white walls and floors, some are inclined to explore a more adventurous colour palette. In this 4-room resale flat, the design team from The Scientist were happy to work with owners who desired a home brimming with personality.

The first thing you notice is the unconventional colour palette. The walls in this home have been painted in a muted shade of pink; a colour that pops when paired with the off-white terrazzo floors and pristine white ceiling. The liberal use of pink brings this 969sqft home to life as it visually opens up the floor plan while engaging the senses.

As with any other colour, too much of a single hue can quickly overwhelm an interior. As such, the team introduced darker tones throughout the different rooms. This includes the matte black surfaces on the kitchen cabinet, black faux marble tiles along the living room skirting and dark woodgrains on the bedroom floor. The result is a well balanced home that is defined by a bold colour choice.

Since this is an old flat, the designers wanted to tweak the floor plan to make it more accessible for the owners. One of the first things they did was to redefine the communal areas. The original kitchen is a relatively small space, but the owners don’t cook often. However, they enjoy hosting friends and family on weekends. To accommodate this the design team first knocked down the kitchen walls, effectively turning it into an open-concept space that sits on the same plane as the living and dining zones. They then custom-built an island dining table topped with a distinct terrazzo tabletop that complements the colour scheme well.

The Scientist’s designers also made considerable changes to the bedroom. By combining two rooms into one, they managed to form a large master bedroom complete with a walk-in wardrobe. One of the biggest challenges in this home was the awkward layout of the original master bedroom, which had an odd, protruding window. Instead of hiding this away, The Scientist incorporated it into the design and turned it into a cosy little nook.
