Occupied by a young family who is unafraid to try new things, the standout feature of this flat is an unfinished, one of a kind red brick wall. “They wanted something that is different – not the industrial look that we always see. They wanted every angle of the flat to tell a story,” designer Young Tay says of the homeowners’ brief.
In keeping with the colour scheme of the grey flooring, a classic Tadao Ando-style concrete wall backdrops the television console. According to the designer, this accent wall features groove lines embossed with rebars instead of traditional slits. The rest of the walls in the living room spot a two-tone finishing with bright red exposed electrical conduits that continue into the kitchen.
In between the foyer and the kitchen, a block of semi-open shelves serve as a space divider, and display for plants and accessories. As the family bonds the most during mealtimes, the kitchen flows into the dining space seamlessly. The latter is composed of a solid wood table with wooden textures and a metal pendant that befits the overall industrial aesthetic.
As the flat was built in the 1980s, the layout of the kitchen had to be modified to suit modern preferences. Generous storage spaces run along one side of the kitchen wall and offer ample room for meal preparation. Shades of grey dominate the kitchen counter, bottom drawers and flooring while the top shelves are accented by woodgrain laminates for a touch of irregularity.
Despite being predominantly monochromatic, the master bedroom is cosy and homely thanks to warm elements like the wooden floor tiles and the unique headboard. Playful elements such as a single naked lightbulb with a knotted wire, black and red pipes, and an exposed sink add personality to the master bedroom.
The bathroom sports a clean look with light concrete walls, patterned floor tiles and black-framed shower screen. The natural patterns formed on the walls and floor lend texture while concealed toilet trunking and streamlined fixtures add refinement.
