Open to the public and design professionals of all fields, Archifest 2018 celebrates architecture and the built environment with over 50 events from 28th September to 10th October. Themed Design For Life, the annual festival will be held at the Pavilion @ Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza and 11 other key locations within the city. This year’s line-up includes 10 exhibitions, 12 talks, and 16 workshops and tours to cater to the varied interests and focus of festival-goers. Below are 10 events not to be missed.

#1 Architours

Back for the 12th edition, Architours brings a range of selected works that addresses this year’s festival sub-themes. There will be eight tours to 24 locations held over two weekends for participants to explore, and get insights of the driving design and construction. Tour venues range from residences to hotels, schools, concert halls and more.

When: 29th to 30th September, 6th October to 7th October; 9am to 2.30pm and 1pm to 6.30pm

#2 Film screenings

Explore people-centric design through a filmmaker’s lens with a curated selection of films by accomplished filmmakers that offer multifaceted perspectives on the topic. Screenings will take place over two weekends and featured films include MarioBotta: The Space Beyond (Switzerland), 03-Flats (Singapore), The Infinite Happiness (France), Barbicania (France/UK) and Faces Places (France).

#3 KIDsBuild

Organised by BEEP (Built Environment Education Programme) in partnership with Archifest 2018, KIDsBuild offers a series of hands-on workshops that children and families can partake. Participants have the opportunities to build their own city with a variety of model-making materials, to promote the learning of the cultural and built environment in Singapore.

When: 27th September, 1pm to 5pm

#4 WATG’s Great Architectural Bake-off

Witness eight Singapore top architects and designers go head to head in an effort to build some of Asia’s most iconic buildings entirely out of cake. The global event, back for its second edition in Singapore will see designers swap concrete for confectionary, and floors for flour. Last year, DP Architects took the crown with their winning entry of Singapore’s iconic Esplanade. The tastiest building, on the other hand, went to CPG with their creation of Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

#5 Edible Gardens

Always thought the concept of urban farming to be far-fetched especially in HDB homes? SUTDIO is set to change people’s mindsets through its Edible Gardens workshop, where participants will learn to reimagine leftover spaces in their homes and offices for opportunities to grow their very own ‘mini farms’ in these environments.

When: 7th October, 10am to 12pm

#6 City Composition

See Singapore in a new light though a sharing session and site walk around the lion city. The workshop also includes a basic photography lesson before participants head out to capture the landscape, cityscape and humanities aspects of architecture through their lens.

#7 Your Expressive City Sketch

Bring out the creative side in you at Your Expressive City Sketch workshop. The three-hour workshop instructed by SUTDIO’s Pocholo Issa Estremos will teach participants to sketch real city life using pen and watercolour.

When: 6th October, 3pm to 6pm

#8 Time Capsule

Can design remain sustainable through time with aesthetics, concept and build? The Time Capsule talk and exhibition by Industry+ will showcase pieces from the local furniture producer’s collection and those in collaboration with WOHAbeing.

When: Weekdays, 11am to 7pm; and Saturdays, 11am to 5pm

#9 Architecture Adventure

Archifest 2018 Architecture Adventure The Architecture of ArtScience Museum Tour

Join ArtScience Museum for an exclusive three-day event that explores the role of architecture in the local and global environment through a series of workshops, tours and drop-in sessions for children with different abilities. Tour ArtScience Museum, explore Singapore’s cityscapes and create craftwork.

#10 Walls of Connection

For the first time ever, members of the public can paint a mural wall using Dulux Colour Play Testers, led in collaboration with local architecture firm Kite Studio Architecture. Visitors will get to paint the bricks to create a visual representation of the iconic and well-loved Rochor Centre with a small donation fee that will go towards a selected charity.
