From the moment you step into this Penrose condo, the mood is calm and light—more hotel suite than high-rise. Interior designer Zax Loh of Plush Interior Design tailored the space for a married couple and their dog, distilling the brief into neutral tones and soft, understated luxury. “They wanted a contemporary home with the quiet polish of a hotel suite,” says Zax.

Completed in 10 weeks on a $65,000 renovation budget, he delivered that vision through meticulous detailing and a thoughtful reconfiguration of the kitchen entrance, now aligned along the rooms for smoother circulation. At the front entrance, fluted panels conceal the doorway to the household shelter, creating a seamless run of hidden storage and display.

Soft lighting in the living area washes across the original marble floors and a feature wall in marble-patterned laminate from EDL. “It’s actually a smooth texture,” shares Zax, “but it looks very three-dimensional, and we used the warm lighting effect to bring out the grain pattern.” A curvilinear TV console framed in metallic trimmings and with a custom base for the subwoofer tie the space together, balancing sculptural form with the room’s tranquil mood.

By the window, the feature wall curves softly at the edge, adding a gentle flow to the space. Slim metallic trimmings catch the light, outlining the dark laminate panels with a touch of understated shine. It’s a quiet detail that brings balance and warmth to the modern setting.

Behind the sofa, a row of laminate wall panels conceals a hidden doorway that leads to the private rooms. “We designed a concealed door to hide the hallway as the homeowners requested more privacy,” says Zax. The kitchen entrance, originally located near the front door, was also reconfigured and tucked neatly behind this panelled wall for better flow. “Previously, you had to walk through the living room to get to the kitchen,” he explains. “Now it connects directly to the walkway, making daily movement much easier.”

In the multipurpose room that doubles as a study and closet, the same attention to detail continues. “The cabinets and work desk are all custom-made,” says Zax. “The cabinet in the centre supports the tabletop and also includes a pull-out drawer for the printer, making it easier to use and store neatly.”

Without a wardrobe in the master bedroom, there was room to accommodate a European king-sized bed. The space captures the mood of a luxury suite, where light and texture work in harmony. A full-height headboard of padded panels anchors the room, framed by timber-style laminates and a soft halo of light from the bedside pendants that illuminate the curved corners.

“I used groove lines to create more texture,” says Zax, referring to the timber-style laminates framing the bedside tables. Next to one of the tables, a slim storage unit holds towels and nighttime essentials, keeping everything within reach without visual clutter.
“The homeowners were very detailed,” recalls Zax, who worked closely with them to refine every texture and tone through several rounds of material selection. The result is a tranquil retreat that feels luxurious yet grounded, where Plush Interior Design’s balance of texture, lighting, and proportion brings the quiet satisfaction of hotel living into everyday life.
