Home Type: 4-room HDB flat
Floor Area: 1,023sqft
The brief for this Tengah flat was refreshingly straightforward: to create a simple, comfortable space for a daughter and her father. Design Director Chris Zhang of Plush Interior Design translated that vision into a modest yet intentional aesthetic, defined by clean lines, gentle curves and inviting, tactile finishes.
Chris planned to work around the existing glossy tiles in the living area and kitchen, using carpentry and ceiling treatments to uplift the space. By layering in these design elements, he was able to create a more restful atmosphere while retaining the flat’s original tiles from HDB.
“We constructed a curved false ceiling to visually connect the living area and TV console, creating a smoother sense of flow,” Chris shares. Both the feature wall and console are finished in a limewash-inspired texture that introduces a soft, weathered look.
Aligned with the feature wall is a recessed display cabinet illuminated with ambient lighting, adding warmth and visual interest to the dining area. Together with the streamlined layout of the cabinetry, these design choices enhance the home’s quiet elegance and a sense of openness and flow.
The weathered look continues in the kitchen, where the walls were finished in a cement textured coating from Performance Coatings International, giving a distressed yet homely feel. “The homeowner wanted something different, so we proposed this wall finish across the kitchen, and even at the fridge,” says Chris. Terrazzo countertops from Melmer Stoneworks add an artisanal touch, complemented by large-format tiled backsplashes that keep the space feeling seamless and practical.
Even the half wall next to the service yard is finished in the same textured coating, echoing the material palette used throughout the home. Paired with terrazzo countertops, the surfaces bring depth and cohesion to the compact space.
In the bedrooms, minimal interventions were made beyond wardrobe installations. The master bedroom, occupied by the daughter, features a custom false ceiling with a curved pelmet that mirrors the design details in the living room. “This curved element helps maintain a visual consistency throughout,” says Chris.
Completed in 10 weeks with a budget of $50,000, this flat in Tengah stands out not for extravagant gestures but for its quiet confidence. With light interventions and a pared-back palette, Chris has achieved a warm, fuss-free home that prioritises comfort and function.
