Flexible solutions and an open layout make this BTO flat unique

As the couple living in this BTO flat are first-time homeowners with living habits yet to come into being, they were uncertain of what they wanted specifically for their home. But one thing’s for sure, “the home needed to be comfortable enough where they can kick up their feet yet classy enough for them to be house proud,” shares Aart Director Ivan Lin of Aart Boxx Interior.

With the hopes of spending more time at home to relax and entertain guests, the main living space has been designed as such. Its open layout, which facilitates ease of movement and a larger sense of space, is furnished with an L-shaped sofa and large poufs. “To make the most use of space, a bar counter table sit parked behind the sofa, serving as a work desk and an informal dining space,” Ivan notes.

Adjacent to the living space lies the dining area, which has been cleverly delineated by a shoe cabinet instead of a wall to keep the layout as open as possible. Here, the industrial style furnishings serve as a precursor to the kitchen. But what really encourages dialogue and visual link between the two spaces is a series of multifold mild steel windows that can be opened to improve airflow or closed to contain cooking fumes within the kitchen.

Yet, the main highlight of the kitchen is its entrance wall cladded with diagonal woodgrain wall tiles. The feature injects warmth to the space and temper with the dark grey cabinetry. “To further break up the linearity, we introduced hexagon-shaped tiles for the backsplash and larger, rectangular tiles for the flooring,” explains Ivan. “The interplay of light and dark also works in the couple’s favour as the husband likes dark colours while the wife prefers lighter shades.”

Since there are only two people living in this BTO flat, two bedrooms have been combined for a larger master bedroom replete with an en-suite and a walk-in wardrobe. Unlike the rest of this BTO flat, the master suite dons a darker colour palette of grey walls and dark wood furnishings for a more restful ambience. A full-height sliding door conceals and leads into the walk-in wardrobe, with a mirror affixed to it to reflect light and visually expand the space.

The en-suite, with its grey-toned walls and floors, bears the same design language as the bedroom. Though a space where daily ablutions are performed, style was not compromised here. The same can be said for the rest of the flat. From material selection to space planning, from colour palette to functional details, this is definitely no cookie-cutter home.
