For this young couple, there were several things they wanted to change about their resale flat. While spacious at 1,292sqft, the five-room HDB flat had little natural light entering the home.
Bringing in light was one of the challenges for AP Concept. Aaron Poh, the director of the interior design company, says, “We knocked down the storeroom behind the living area to expand the space and have more light.” The dining area now sits behind the sofa where it can enjoy some natural light enhanced with pendant lights.
With the dining area moved closer to the living area, they now have more space near the entrance. Here, the team installed two customised storage units, one of which is a full-height shoe cabinet. The other accommodates an altar, as well as open and glass-fronted niches for the couple’s model aeroplane collection and treasured mementoes. Other storage solutions include pull-out baskets in the kitchen and an ample wall-to-wall wardrobe in the bedroom.
With a budget of S$60,000, these solutions pander to the couple’s brief, which was mainly to have a clean, clutter-free and contemporary space. Style wise, Aaron drew up a palette of white, black and grey. “We also created a black frame on the false ceiling in the living area with matte black paint,” Aaron says. The black outlines are echoed in the custom storage units throughout the home.
A wall along the walkway is painted in grey, and fitted with track lighting for a gallery-like area. Lastly, the master bedroom is designed as a calming retreat down to the smallest detail. A half-height structure has been constructed behind the headboard to hide cables and air-conditioner trunking for a fuss-free haven.
