Here’s 5 things to look forward to during Singapore Design Week
4 March 2016
We’re gearing ourselves up for a very eventful March.
If you ask us, Singapore Design Week (SDW) really ought to be Singapore Design Month instead. Stretching from 8 to 20 March 2016 at the National Design Centre and other locations around the island, the 2-week-long event is packed with a plethora of shows and activities both day and night!
Looking at the line-up of events, we cannot help but notice that with the wide variety of offerings this year, there is something for everyone, whether you’re a design professional, a budding designer, or the curious man on the street. Here’s what you can look forward to at this year’s SDW:
Where: Design and Make Fair, 8-20 March
Ceramic dolls from Polkaros
More than 30 Singapore designers, craftsmen and artisans will gather at the National Design Centre from 8 to 20 March as part of the first-ever Design and Make Fair. Visit the fair to get acquainted with the growing community of local designers and makers and be introduced to the wide variety of ‘Designed in Singapore’ and ‘Made in Singapore’ products. There are hands-on activities like soap-crafting, glass-painting, leather-crafting and ceramic doll-making where you can make and bring home your own handcrafted products. Perfect for the crafty-types.
Where: SingaPlural, 7-13 March
Souvenirs from Singapore, a partner of SingaPlural
Bring the whole family down to 99 Beach Road to join in the festivities happening there from 7 to 13 March. Returning for the fifth consecutive year, SingaPlural 2016 – the anchor event of Singapore Design Week – has a bountiful number of 71 installations all promising an immersive experience to engage your senses on a deeper level. Attend one of the talks and workshops or go on a design tour to places like Gorilla Press, Je t’aime and Children’s Centre for Creativity.
Where: Maison&Objet Asia 2016, 8-11 March
Originating from Paris, Maison&Objet initiated the Asian edition two years and M&O Asia has since become one of the most anticipated interior design showcases in the region. Design enthusiasts and business-types will be flocking to Marina Bay Sands from 8 to 11 March to spot key market trends and gain inspiration from a series of conferences by award-winning architects and interior design experts.
Where: Naiise at Clarke Quay, 11 March – 10 June
Astro Speaker from Tree Labs
We’re excited to see the merchandise that online design curator buyMeDesign is bringing to our local shores. The collaboration between Hong Kong-based buyMeDesign and local design e-tailer Naiise has resulted in a pop-up store that will be stocked with exciting products from In bed With Designers, a design pop-up event that took place in Hong Kong last December. Some of the designers featured are Audiopark and Foxcat Design from Hong Kong, Studio Banana Things from United Kingdom, and Wood-Design from Taiwan.
Where: Design Trails, 19-20 March
Participants at Design Trails 2015
Besides the ticketed tours organised by SingaPlural, there are also free design trails to take part in. Design Trails will bring you on a specially curated journey to see and experience thoughtful products and experiences. Complimentary shuttle buses from National Design Centre are available to bring you to the various places that are part of the trail.
