An eclectic walk-up apartment with a quirky layout

One of the biggest talking points in the living room of this walk-up apartment is the TV feature wall. The faux brick wall that hides unsightly cables features a single red brick from the original wall the designer demolished. “Since this apartment is really old, it’s nice to put a tiny piece of history back,” says Lawrence Tan, senior interior designer at Third Avenue Studio. Another bold design feature is the siren red door by the TV that connects the common area to the master bedroom.

The warmth of the balcony comes forth through the dark wood-look floor tiles, the cosy upholstered seating areas and the abundance of greenery. To give the adjoining living room a more spacious feel, the balcony’s steel bi-fold doors can be opened fully, bathing the interiors with ample natural light.

Cement screed floors dominate the walk-up apartment. The laminated wardrobes in the master bedroom even match the floor. The designer says: “I didn’t want the wardrobes to cause any division in the bedroom, making it feel smaller.” Placing the wardrobes on opposite sides of the room also prevents them from blocking out the light source. As for the bed, the platform zones the area without dividing the space.

There are no doors separating the master bedroom from the en suite. The latter capitalises on the narrow walkway to accommodate an extended vanity cabinet. The shower is located at the end of the walkway while the wash closet is hidden from sight. “Since the bathroom is really tiny, I decided to install the wash basin just outside the bathroom, so the homeowners have a comfortable shower space,” Lawrence explains.

Besides housing plenty of concealed storage, the wet kitchen has a little loft bedroom for the domestic helper. Maximising the three-metre ceiling height, Lawrence cleverly used unconventional pockets of space to carve out a capsule-inspired hovel. A custom-made staircase with alternating steps leads to the sliding door entrance with curtains for privacy.

A striking teal door creates visual interest and injects a splash of colour to the muted tones of the wet kitchen, which features light wood laminate kitchen cabinets and Silestone quartz countertop. Having a Dutch door also allows the couple to keep their two large dogs in the kitchen without shutting them out completely.
