Eclecticism gives rise to a BTO flat with soul

description

A walkway clad in Moroccan style tiles and an open kitchen with blue cabinets are apparent upon entering the flat. Against an industrial-style backdrop, the wet kitchen’s backsplash (featuring dusty pink subway tiles arranged vertically for a modern European feel) stands out. Furthering the eclecticism, Peranakan-themed tiles clad the backing of the kitchen cabinet’s open display, highlighting the niche.

Blue is a cheery shade that evokes a sense of tranquillity. It was therefore a no-brainer to incorporate it into the couple’s family home. Apart from the kitchen and entrance, the vibrant shade also makes appearances in the sleeping quarters and living room. It serves as a complementary contrast to the greyish tones of the industrial style living room.

Following the vertical arrangement of subway tiles in the kitchen, the common bathroom boasts a white and muted teal wall in the same material and layout, offering a semblance of visual continuity. In contrast, the bathroom floor is covered with black homogeneous tiles with flecks of white, green and maroon, creating a mishmash of colours, textures and styles.

Although the outermost walls of the master bedroom were torn down, there was still limited space for the design team to work with. To maximise the footprint in the bedroom, they created a built-in storage system that incorporated the wardrobe, dresser and bedside table (a niche carved out of the L-shaped cabinets).
