Home to a young couple in their 30s, this 4-room HDB BTO flat in Toa Payoh was imbued with a unique look, thanks to Chanel Cheah of AC Vision Design.
Renovated for around $40,000, the flat now has focal features in each room that were created using colour, texture and materials.
As soon as you step into the living area, a feature wall – designed using bold blue paint and multi-tone faux bricks – grabs your attention. It serves as a backdrop for the TV, and also a stylish anchor for the open-concept space.
Homogeneous tiles that resemble concrete screed, with subtle texture and colour gradients, were specially chosen for the flooring. This adds depth to the space, apart from helping to set the tone of a modern industrial-style interior.
More texture is introduced, through various patterned laminates such as the rough and raw stone one for the storage cabinets and distressed timber one for the barn-style sliding door that separates the kitchen.
The designer also got the kitchen wall demolished. In place of the wall, a peninsula counter and a slide and fold counter window allows the narrow cookspace to be opened up. This structural change also helped to visually enlarge the compact dining area and corridor leading to the bedrooms.
As for the master bedroom, vinyl flooring with a similar effect as the tiles in the living area were chosen. This keeps the modern industrial vibe consistent, while allowing for a subtle variation in the aesthetics.
Warm wood-tone as well as black laminates were selected as finishes for the built-in wardrobe, to create eye-catching contrast.
