Ushering warmth and visual depth, dark colours are the order of day in this bachelor pad by Fineline Design.

While the Scandinavian style usually calls for all-white or light-coloured interiors, this resale flat adopts the opposite colour spectrum of dark and masculine tones. Says designer Roger Sim of Fineline Design: “The homeowner loves the Nordic style but requested for a darker colour palette for his entire home.” The dark hue, though, is tempered with a lighter shade of vinyl flooring.
Besides dark-coloured walls, the homeowner also wanted the feature walls to evoke a soothing quality. Roger cleverly camouflaged a wall of cabinetry using dark green laminates with groove lines on them, forming an arresting constellation of chevron patterns. These striking patterns add depth and visual interest to the pared-back living space.
Enclosed by a glass sliding door, the kitchen is as efficient as it is sleek-looking. Roger created an L-shaped layout for the cook space which comprises counters in matte black. It works well in concealing the service facilities at the back where the setup of the counters hides the washer perfectly from view.
One noteworthy add-on that maximises the flexibility of the space is the moveable island counter. It can be positioned in the middle of the space to function as an island or be set against the wall to reclaim space. Roger adds: “This creates additional workspace for the homeowner especially when he bakes.”
A less-is-more design approach is served with the minimalistic pairing of the matte dark grey counters with the black quartz surfaces. In contrast to this clean-lined setting, the addition of subway tiles with stone-like textures stands out prominently as the backsplash.
As with most old resale HDB bathrooms, this one needed an extensive overhaul. The layout was therefore altered and extended to accommodate a decent shower stall and a vanity cabinet. Aesthetics wise, the bathroom leans towards a resort-style – sleek yet soothing; one that stands the test of time.
