In Queenstown, a four-room resale flat has been transformed into a stunning modern luxe farmhouse, proving that small spaces can exude grandeur when designed with purpose. Spearheaded by designer Hace Chua of Ethereall, the renovation involved a meticulous blend of rustic elegance and contemporary comforts, tailored to fit the homeowners’ active lifestyle.
The homeowners – a fitness-loving duo, one an engineer and the other a personal trainer – had a clear vision. “They wanted an open-concept kitchen, a statement island, a spacious bathroom, and ample storage,” says Hace.
The existing layout needed drastic modifications, including hacking walls to open up the communal space and enlarging the master bedroom by shifting walls. The entire flooring had to be redone to align with their envisioned aesthetics.
Hace recalls: “The homeowners desired a rustic touch within the modern farmhouse theme, so we spent time sourcing the perfect textures and tones for the tiles, cabinets, and accessories.” The design approach prioritised warmth and timeless charm while optimising space efficiency.
What was once a bedroom is now an inviting living area, marked by thoughtful partitioning that enhances the farmhouse feel. Shaker-style cabinetry and wood accents infuse a sense of rustic charm, complemented by a neutral palette.
“Instead of running carpentry across the entire space, we introduced partitions as borders, adding character and structure to the open-plan layout,” Hace explains. The wood laminates from Panaplast, contrast beautifully against the off-white laminates, creating a visually cohesive ambience.
Given the homeowners’ love for hosting, the dining space needed to be both functional and stylish. Ethereall designed a seamless island-dining combination, a space-saving solution that maximises openness while allowing room for the homeowners’ dream oversized couch.
“We wanted the dry pantry and island to be a focal point, drawing guests into the space while keeping things practical. The addition of a wine fridge and snack storage here was perfect for their social lifestyle without needing to create a separate storeroom,” Hace shares.
In the kitchen, the team sourced the ideal marble-look subway tiles to create the perfect backsplash. A standout design feature is the stove backsplash, crafted from Silestone Charcoal Soapstone Suede. Instead of standard tiles, this countertop material extends upwards, forming a practical ledge for spices and cooking essentials – perfect for the homeowners who cook frequently.
The master bedroom retains a clean and airy aesthetic, in sync with the home’s farmhouse-inspired elements. Shaker-style cabinetry and gold accents introduce elegance, while a custom barn door lends a distinctive touch.
The master bathroom is a true showpiece. With market limitations on tile sizes and colours, Ethereall took an innovative approach – sourcing two different 600mm x 600mm marble-patterned tiles, then cutting and laying them in a diamond pattern for a bespoke effect. The result? A luxurious yet grounded retreat.
By reconfiguring the layout and integrating thoughtful design elements, Ethereall has turned this cookie-cutter four-room resale flat into a harmonious blend of modern luxury and farmhouse warmth. With every detail crafted to reflect the homeowners’ needs, this renovation proves that the perfect home is not just about aesthetics, but about how space enhances lifestyle.
