Home Type: 4-room HDB flat

The owner of this four-room resale flat needed her home to be spacious and afford ease of movement for her elderly mother, who uses a wheelchair. This was a bit of a challenge given the unit’s fairly compact spaces, but interior designers Raymond Soh and Simon Chin from OVON were more than up to the task. The pair studied the layout carefully and reconfigured the spaces to fit the family’s requirements.

To accommodate the client’s needs, the design team shifted the wall between the master bedroom and living area. This created a more spacious dining area with more room to move around.

Style wise, the owner leaned towards a clean, modern aesthetic. Customised features like the television console and storage units are slim and neat, taking up minimal space. A desk for work-from-home days is placed right behind the sofa to make the best use of this common area.

Every inch is well planned, from the customised shoe cabinet near the entrance to the bar counter by the window.

While the living area is awash in relaxing neutral hues, the kitchen is a bright and energising space in blue and white. With more seats at the island unit, the home is designed to welcome large gatherings with family and friends.

The design team focused on ample storage solutions for the kitchen. But the storage units are also practical, with a mix of open shelves and covered cabinets.

Blue makes an appearance in the bathroom, too, complementing the white textured tiled walls and woodgrains.

By shifting another wall between both common bedrooms, the design team succeeded in including a walk-in wardrobe for the owner. Instead of a standard design, the team installed glass sliding doors for this closet. Bedrooms in HDB flats can often appear boxy and cramped, but this design feature has produced a room with depth and openness. Last but not least, the black frames echo the black accents in the bathroom for continuity.
