A bright new start for a once-dark Eunos flat

description

For this young couple, home was never meant to be simply a place to live, but a light-filled backdrop to the next chapter of their lives. Their days revolve around simple comforts, from morning coffee to a long, relaxing rain shower. Sharing the flat with their dog, Bambi, and planning for a family, they came to OVON with a clear vision for the home.

“The aim was to create a calm, warm, and quietly inspiring home, a retreat from their busy lives,” say the designers. It also had to work hard: room for a growing family, space for Bambi to roam, and an easy flow for the gatherings the couple love to host. Aesthetically, they wanted something bright and cohesive, elegant yet personal, and open and welcoming throughout.

That was no small ask, considering the flat’s starting point. The 17-year-old resale unit was dated and visually heavy. Dark purple window films, extensive grilles, and a closed-off layout shut out the light, making the home feel smaller than it was. To meet the brief, the design team rethought the space almost entirely.

The layout was the first thing to change. The designers reworked the floor plan to create a more open and fluid connection across the living, dining, and kitchen, offering the couple a home that accommodates everyday life and entertaining alike. Natural light became a defining feature. The existing bay windows were retained and maximised, drawing daylight deep into the interior.

The kitchen saw the most dramatic shift. Once small and dark, it was expanded and opened to the rest of the home through the project’s most distinctive feature, French-style glass partitions between the kitchen and living area. “It allows the kitchen to feel visually connected to the rest of the home, enhancing the light flow and sense of openness, while still giving the option to enclose it when needed for heavier cooking,” say the designers.

Material choices carried the calm, elegant mood the couple was after. “A palette of soft tones, white surfaces, and warm accents, such as the gold handles, creates a calm and elegant atmosphere,” say the team. “Textural elements like the Spanish floor tiles and Italian backsplash tiles add depth and character.” Together, they lend a sense of craft to an otherwise pared-back scheme.

Storage was handled with the same restraint. Built-in cabinetry, especially in the master bedroom, maximises space for everything the couple needs while keeping surfaces clean and uncluttered. Practical touches round out the design, including a concealed water heater in the bathroom that tidies up the look and makes upkeep easier.

Completed in nine weeks, the renovation turns a dark and dated flat into a bright and welcoming abode. Through a new open floor plan, a light-filled kitchen, and a palette that balances elegance with warmth, OVON have given the couple a space that is ready for daily rituals, hosting, and the new family chapter ahead.
