The owner of this one-bedder apartment is a bachelor who envisioned a dark and luxurious home for himself and his pet dog. Given the unit’s compact size, the space needed to prioritise storage, and have enough room for his four-legged friend to roam.
arche° has interpreted this brief in a highly sophisticated manner and with creative flair. “The main design aspect was to create a sense of continuity and seamlessness throughout the space, and so we clad all the walls and the concealed doors leading to the master suite and bathroom in the same laminate finish,” says Edward Seet, the firm’s principal designer, who worked on the project with senior designer Aloysius Ng.
“This design treatment led us to pay a lot more attention to details and joinery required to achieve seamlessness. At the same time, we explored different materials to enhance and add depth to our design approach,” he continues. The deep shade of ash on walls and cabinetry is finely balanced with a light coloured ceiling, floor in microcement and counters in paler tones, while accent and ambient lighting create an atmosphere.
Corrugated steel is used to clad the ceiling in the foyer/kitchen. The cool and reflective surface of this unexpected feature does a wonderful job of lending dimension and a layer of mystery to the space. It evokes curiosity as the eye moves upwards to observe the rippling effect.
Renovated at a cost of $120,000, everything in this apartment has been thoughtfully redone to realise the homeowner’s vision of a luxurious yet functional home. The design is meticulous in its space planning, which was essential given the tight quarters, and the furniture come in just the right proportions to suit the space and the homeowner’s needs. With non-structural walls now removed, custom cabinetry is used to maximise storage and subtly segregate the space, and so the apartment feels more spacious.
The living area features a modular, multipurpose worktop that can be pulled out from a storage cabinet to function as a grooming platform for the owner’s dog, or be moved to various spots in the home to serve as a work desk. When not in use, it can be tucked away to provide a clear pathway between the kitchen and living space. Also, rather than cramping it indoors, the dining is placed out on the balcony, where a slim dining table has been chosen as the perfect fit for the space.
The bedroom and bathroom follow the same design language where discreet, harmonious shades and strategic light placements bring attention to materiality and the finer details. As yet another beautiful example of design integration, the stylish built-in headboard seamlessly extends to include a slim desk and bedside table
arche° has brought a deep sense of intimacy and coolness to this dark and monochromatic apartment, which is just perfect for the homeowner and his dog.
