Who says older flats cannot feel joyful and full of character? Located within the mature Toa Payoh estate, this three-room resale flat was refreshed by designer Kasey Wong of Reborn Interior with a lively pastel palette inspired by the homeowner’s brief for vibrant hues with a hint of retro charm. Soft colours and gentle curves draw out a characterful interior that balances everyday ease for a family of four with three children.
“For the carpentry, we selected soft and candy-like tones such as pink, yellow, and blue. It feels youthful and almost café-like while being functional for a home,” says Kasey of the colour scheme. Warm lighting and built-in display lighting further enhance the space’s boutique-like ambience.
A curved island with a pastel pink base forms the visual centrepiece of the communal space. “The island counter with terrazzo details was designed as a featured piece that adds texture,” says Kasey. Above it, the ribbon-detailed pendant lights introduce a touch quirky, feminine charm.
Within the kitchen, cabinetry in bright pastel tones introduces a cheerful character without overwhelming the compact footprint. The colour blocking strengthens continuity with the adjoining communal space while reinforcing the home’s playful retro-modern palette.
The layout has also been reconfigured to improve circulation across the home. “Originally, the kitchen had separate laundry and cooking areas,” says Kasey. “We decided to remove the sliding door between them to create a seamless flow from the living area to the kitchen.”
Moving into the living area, the TV wall reflects the home’s playful concept through flowing curves and soft colour layering. Inspired by the familiar pastel tones of Paddle Pop ice cream, the blue carpentry paired with the pink feature wall gives the space its own cheerful identity.
Near the entrance, built-in shoe storage and a compact settee form a neat landing zone for everyday routines. A change in flooring marks the transition into the home, while rounded carpentry edges echo the soft forms seen throughout the interior.
In the master bedroom, soft pink tones and rounded detailing continue the home’s gentle pastel language. “The vanity subtly divides the space while maintaining openness,” says Kasey of the custom-built feature.
A row of warmly-lit display shelves beside the bed adds a softly layered backdrop, complementing the upholstered headboard. Together, these elements create a calm and intimate setting that feels both cosy and refined.
Completed at a renovation cost of $64,000, this refreshed resale flat reflects Reborn Interior’s thoughtful use of colour and gentle forms. It is now a cheerful space that the family of four with three children can enjoy every day.
