Modern vintage meets grunge in this unconventional home

Homeowners usually have an idea or concept of how they want their homes to look like but not the owner of this residence. Pea Chong, creative director of interior design firm D’ Initial Concept explains: “Instead of a design concept, the owners wanted their home to embody and express their characters and lifestyles, which I find really interesting.”

So, the starting point was to have a whole lot of dark finishes contrasted with white surfaces to evoke a sensuous, masculine vibe. “There is a combination of design concepts for this unconventional home, which is a modern vintage look with a tinge of grunge in the kitchen,” Pea explains.

The overhaul of the five-room HDB flat has produced, among many other design features, a bar counter fronting the kitchen. The kitchen includes ceiling-mounted storage shelves that showcase a collection of limited-edition liquor. Here, the dark cabinets and flooring set the tone for a monochromatic space. Elevating, or rather taking the party up a notch is the red, hot Smeg fridge.

Likewise, the living area is also decked out in dark colours. Black marble wallpaper and a dark television feature wall set the mood for movie nights, with a brown leather sofa to boot. Anchoring the space is a boldly patterned rug that creates visual interest in the dark, moody space.

The flat comes with a study, and this is where the dining area is located next to. Light filters into the spacious dining area furnished with a six-seater dining set. “Aside from listening to music in the living area, the homeowner also loves to entertain,” Pea shares. “The study is also where she gets her inspiration for poetry.” This light-filled space is fitted with custom bookshelves for books and art objects. Pea introduced colours into the study with the custom bookshelves and pink armchair.

The master bedroom, on the other hand, incorporates a sliding feature wall. The intent was to hide the master bathroom and walk-in wardrobe for a streamlined and elegant look. In this home, one bathroom sports black-and-white patterned tiles that contrast against the glossy black wall tiles. In another, the look is industrial with stucco effect walls. D’ Initial Concept also constructed a raised kerb in each to create the illusion of a bathtub.

Every homeowner has preferences and needs that differentiate their home from another. Finding the right interior designer who can realise the look is half the battle won. With Pea at the helm of the project, this HDB flat eschews the conventional with its bold choice of colours and finishes, yet without losing the elegance that the homeowners wanted.
