One of Singapore’s hidden treasures is tucked away in a dead end street off East Coast Road. Here, you’ll find a row of conserved Peranakan houses dating back to an era when this neighbourhood sat next to swamps and marshes. Nowadays, these inter-terrace houses are unique buildings against Singapore’s modern architecture; unspoilt intricate exteriors sitting pretty amidst its cookie-cutter neighbours.
Design Intervention saw the potential of the space, and described the house as “complex and surprising”. Entering the home is a surprise with its multiple levels, unexpected room sizes and luxurious ceiling height. The front living room dramatically welcomes guests – the house looks much smaller from the outside – and the interior designer.
The master bedroom, up on the third floor, has a large and airy interior that brings a sense of serenity that’s hard to replicate in SIngaporean homes. The same can be said of the guest room on the second floor, with its Colonial tone that adds a European flavour to this Asian house.
Equally impressive is the kitchen. Despite its long and narrow dimensions, the designers made sure that this room would leave a lasting impression.
