The owners of this three-bedder – a couple in their early 40s – had a clear vision of what they wanted. A gold and white colour scheme, posh interiors that aren’t over the top, natural textures, marble surfaces, and geometric details were some of the things they had in mind.

As frequent travellers who spend about a quarter of their time abroad, they wanted their new home to exude a cosmopolitan air as well. Black N White Haus was commisioned to recreate the glamorous interiors of European hotels in their apartment located in the Central Business District.

Chiefly employed in the common areas, the simplicity of the decor and white-led scheme not only remedy the small footprint, but also brighten up the space. Golden trimmings, which take the form of steel inlays, add to the luxury of the white marble accents in the living room without being too imposing.

An overhung display along the ceiling connects the TV console and the cabinets by the dining table. While it unites the two separate features in the communal space, the black shelving also breaks the uniformity of the all-white furniture. Vincent, the designer, admits that it was quite a challenge to materialise, but a striking addition nevertheless.

Handpicked slabs of Italian Statuario marble wrap around the L-shaped breakfast bar table, lending a quiet sense of elegance and grandiosity to the area. The table is built into the adjoining full-height cabinet, which houses the couple’s liquor bottles and decanting accessories, and includes closed compartments at the bottom. Situated beside the open kitchen, the dining island blends harmoniously with the TV console in the open-plan space.

The designer peppered vertical motifs throughout the abode, such as the tastefully arranged golden stripes in the living room and the woodgrain panels in the private quarters, to emphasise the apartment’s height. For a consistent design language throughout, Vincent used a striking marble slab as the headboard and complemented it with suspended side tables of the same material.

Besides adding visual depth to the room, the wood panels coupled with the floral wallpaper on the ceiling bring coherence to the subtle nature-inspired theme of the master bedroom. Occupying a small corner of the room is the dresser, whose mirror and wood panels open up to reveal a storage cabinet. As for the ceiling wallpaper from Europe, it zones the entrance and adds subtle colour to the streamlined space.

Used most often by the man of the house, the study area adopts a more masculine appearance with a sleek, black colour scheme. Dark grey wood-look laminates clad the shelves above the table, which boasts a glossy black glass surface and a matching magnetic board for pinning notes and reminders. Above, the band of wooden strips hide the door to a cabinet.
