Customised solutions make this flat liveable for a family of five

description

For most people, moving out of the first home to the second often gives clarity on design solutions that work best for them – especially so when children come into the picture. For this couple, who now have three children, their spare time is spent with the family, and they can often be found lounging together in the living area.

The homeowners preferred a bright interior for their four-room flat, hence Alson Tan of Couple Abode used a light palette of white and pastels. He and his design team also imbued wood patterns into the flat by way of the flooring and custom furnishings.

A standout feature in the living room is the custom platform that connects with the television console. This was crafted to meet the brief, whereby the owners wished for a moveable mattress in the living room for the children to take their afternoon naps. “The platform serves to hide the mattress and functions as a play area for the kids,” says Alson. But designing it proved to be a challenge. “We had a hard time planning the space and determining the size of the platform. The main concern was to avoid sacrificing space for walking and also the television area.”

Doors to the bedrooms are painted in light blue. Here, a slim storage cupboard lines the wall with its wooden laminates adding warmth to the area. Likewise, the kitchen sports woodgrain cabinets matched with white cabinets. To one side, a column of cabinets is built with a niche, so that appliances like the microwave oven or rice cooker can be housed. A dedicated niche frees up the limited countertop space for food prep. The design team also installed cove lighting to illuminate the workspace and switches for convenience.

Similarly, customised solutions for the bathroom have been incorporated. The bathroom walls, vanity area and built-in ledge in the shower stall are laid with cement-look tiles. The team also included a large vessel sink to keep splatters at bay while clutter is minimised with a mirror cabinet.

In addition to providing specific solutions, Couple Abode adhered to the colours that would enhance the flat. Each area carries its own personality with the use of colours, materials and textures, while woodgrains provide a sense of consistency from space to space.
