A stylish flat with bespoke wooden louvred windows

Inspired by Scandinavian simplicity and aesthetics, the homeowners’ brief to the designers of Artistroom was to create a cosy abode with warm wood tones. The designers also addressed the issue of privacy – seeing as the flat is a corridor unit – by installing bespoke adjustable wooden louvred windows.

As the flat is a corridor unit, privacy is an issue, as it looks out into the public walkway. To address this, customised wooden louvred windows were installed over the aluminium sliding windows in the living and dining areas. With the option to simply swing them open, stack-fold them to the side, and tilt the louvres to control the natural light and ventilation levels, this is a big design feature of the home.

After their vacation in Scandinavia, this family of three (a couple and their young daughter) developed a liking for pine and oak wood tones – characteristic elements of Scandinavian style. They desired a home that reflected this, as well as for it to have a clean-lined spacious appeal. To fulfil their wish, the designers from Artistroom made use of neutral colours, enhanced with lots of oak veneer for that cosy warmth. However, the first and key thing they did was to understand the family’s specific daily habits, in order to provide longevity in their design.

An efficient kitchen for frequent cooking, a dedicated study area and plenty of storage space were the priorities of the family. In the dining area, a study nook is tucked at one side. This work area – and any mess that might accumulate – can be concealed effortlessly, thanks to a full-height sliding panel finished entirely in oak veneer. The dining and study area was previously a common bedroom that was hacked to allow for a more spacious common zone for the family to enjoy.

In the kitchen, timeless grey stone-look anti-slip tiles were specially chosen for the floor, to complement the classic elegance of the white subway tile-backsplash. The top-hung cabinets are made of metal, with thin frames and frosted glass panels, breaking away from the common solid-panel kitchen look with a distinctive style. A simple L-shape layout also makes the long and narrow kitchen ideal for frequent cooking.

When it came to the bedroom flooring, the homeowners had a preference for wood. In the master bedroom, the Artistroom designers installed engineered wood flooring that matches the oak veneer used in other applications throughout the home, for consistency. Clever storage solutions can also be seen here – a white wall of cabinets that backdrops the bed provides plenty of storage space in an unobtrusive way. This allows the room to maintain its uncluttered modern aesthetic.
