An industrial-meets-Bauhaus flat in Bedok

A recruiter working in the IT industry wanted his four-room resale flat in Bedok North to work as hard as his social calendar does. Living alone, he spends most of his downtime watching TV at home or hosting family and friends over drinks – and the brief he gave Loft.nine Design Studio reflected that. He asked for an industrial, almost brutalist mood, but one held back from tipping into anything too extreme or dark.

He leaned toward a Bauhaus-inflected minimalism – clean lines and a restrained material palette, with space left over for his personal collection of chrome and stainless-steel decor pieces, and his Milky Way Lego set.

The layout originally held three bedrooms and a store room. Loft.nine kept the second and third bedrooms and the store room as they were, then demolished the wall of the original master bedroom to make way for a larger living space and the dining table the homeowner had specifically wanted.

“We converted the second bedroom into the new master, and the re-planned layout also allowed us to build in a proper walk-in wardrobe, which connects to both the new master bedroom and bathroom,” says Christine Thet, the studio’s senior designer.

The result is a four-room flat that now functions like a two-bedroom unit, weighted toward the spaces the homeowner actually needs.

In the living room, a feature wall built around the TV carries a display area for decorative objects. Further in, beams finished in textured paint run across the dining area’s ceiling as a deliberate highlight rather than something to conceal – a nod to the industrial brief.

One practical snag came early. “The original beams were too low for the air-con trunking to run higher, so we boxed it up with an extra partition below the existing beam, without compromising on servicing access,” Christine says.

In the master bathroom, blue backsplash tiles bring a pop of colour to the subdued palette, while the adjoining walk-in wardrobe holds enough storage for one person without straying from the overall aesthetic.

The flat works quietly when the homeowner is enjoying a solo night, and just as easily when it fills with the company he likes to have over.
