What brings good ventilation to a home? Openings such as windows or doors at each end of a room will form a regular air tunnel and to optimise this airflow, you could consider removing some walls to enjoy breezy open-plan living. If privacy is not a factor, you could even have sliding doors instead of regular ones that can be drawn back fully to promote better air circulation.

A cooling mattress can do wonders for deeper sleep, especially for hot sleepers. It can help to regulate your body temperature by dissipating body heat with its unique cooling properties. The Origin Hybrid Pro mattress features a HexaGrid Plus comfort layer and a SmartClimate cooling system amongst its eight core layers. It packs extra breathability and increased airflow so you won’t ever break a sweat in bed.

Sunlight that enters your home can be a major source of heat, so block it with the right drapes or blinds. Smart blinds like the ALTEX SOLAR from mc.2 can be activated via your smartphone and has a timer function that rolls down the blinds automatically at your preferred timing. This indoor and outdoor blind is also solar powered and does not have any electrical cables or require electricity to function.

Darker colours absorb more sunlight than lighter colours, and these darker hues will feel warmer in the day than lighter tones. To avoid having your home feel like an oven, especially if it’s a space with large, full-height windows, choose a lighter colour scheme to reflect more of the sunrays. White is of course the best tone for your walls and for a cooler room, but if you find it a tad boring, opt for other lighter tones with a more tactile feel. One fine example is Smoke Cloudy Cement laminate from Lamitak, which has deep brushstroke details for a painted textured appearance.

In our tropical climate, there is nothing worse than sitting on furniture that makes you feel warm or sticky. For that reason alone, you might want to consider getting chairs with a cooling backrest. Rattan chairs are a traditional option but for a contemporary yet timeless look, the Fritz Hansen PK4 lounge chair has a well-ventilated backrest clad in halyard to keep you cool.
