A resale HDB maisonette goes monochrome

This HDB maisonette enjoys a luxurious hotel vibe with just white, black and shades of grey.

Timeless and elegant, the monochrome look is highly sought after by many homeowners. But getting it done well is more complex than it looks. From the proportions and lines to the textures and furnishings, every element must be considered to the smallest detail.

“We ensured all materials used were of premium quality for that luxurious touch with the intention of modular living in the house,” says interior designer Nigel Ng of Swift Interior, adding that the owners wanted a luxe hotel feel.

First, Swift Interior tore down the walls between the kitchen and living area in this HDB maisonette. Now, a custom collapsible, black-framed glass divider can close off the space when needed. The design team planned a host of kitchen cabinets in white and embellished them with slim, black handles. An island fronts the space, bringing attention to the marble patterns of the quartz surfaces.

As this is a maisonette unit, it comes with a high-ceilinged balcony and has plenty of natural light. The design team connected it to the kitchen and converted it into a bright and airy dining area. Like the kitchen, statement lighting elevates the black and white space.

The design team matched the streamlined wall-mounted television console with a grey sofa, black-and-white blinds, and a glass coffee table. Matte finishes were chosen for the console and feature wall. The result is a cosy and laid-back feel while ensuring easy maintenance.

The balustrade in this HDB maisonette is black-framed glass that further emphasises the sleek black lines that appear throughout the home. The design team also incorporated mood lighting on the steps to inject a luxurious touch that also aids safety at night.

To produce the contemporary hotel vibe the client wanted in the master bedroom, the design team clad an entire wall in dark-tinted mirror panels. These enhance the sense of space while giving it a sensuous ambience. Furnishings are kept pared down while pendant lights serve as bedside lamps.

Like the master bedroom, the master bathroom also wears glossy finishes that give the space a hotel bathroom ambience via the marble walls and reeded glass doors. It now has an enclosed shower area and a bathtub. Throughout the process, the owners were involved in sourcing for furnishings and lighting in close collaboration with the design team.
