A lunar-inspired flat with luxurious his and her rooms

With people spending more time at home, there is a growing desire to have it be more than a place of rest.

Case in point, the design of this five-room HDB flat works hard to satisfy the owners’ extensive brief – it’s a home that invites romance, that welcomes intimate gatherings, and that allows the husband and wife to enjoy their own individual pursuits.

Designer Derrick Lim of D’ Marvel Scale has set the tone for romance with a lunar-inspired setting where a moody colour palette meets circular objects representative of the moon.

In the living area, a bold shade of blue was chosen for its association with the night sky while classy brass detailing and dim lighting (at night) bring in the mood. Instead of a dining area, the space next to the living area has been given to a custom bar counter where the couple can enjoy drinks together or with friends – and with perfect view of the TV. It’s also where they store their liquor collection.

The dining area has then been transported out onto the balcony for alfresco meals while admiring the scenery.

The entire stretch of wall from the entrance to the balcony bears the same dusky grey colour to create the illusion of length and ultimately, the sense of a bigger living area. It’s also been neatly designed as storage space, a display, and to house the TV console.

In an intentional departure from the lunar theme, the kitchen sees the lighter side in white surfaces and grey subway tiles. The designer has also made the tight space less confined by replacing the wall with a glass partition door.

A dark and elegant mood was achieved in the master bedroom, this time with dark wood surfaces, brass accents, and yet more lunar-inspired details.

The window did not have a good view – it looked out onto the neighbour’s flat. To overcome the issue, Derrick has transformed the window ledge into a headboard and half-height storage. Roller blinds are used to hide the view and for privacy. They also serve as a textured backdrop, thus lending greater intimacy to the space.

Perhaps most luxurious of all, two of the three bedrooms in this flat have been converted into exclusive his and her rooms. Room for the Mrs (above) is a home office with a reading area set on the window ledge. Framed in blue and with ample natural light, this is a cosy spot to enjoy a quiet read.

Room for the Mr is a ‘man cave’ where he can pursue his gaming hobby, undisturbed. The sofa bed also accommodates overnight guests.

There may be very few HDB flats that fulfil so much. This home is one of them.
