The beauty of having your own space is that it can be designed around your needs, personality and passions. A couple with a five-room HDB flat in Punggol wanted their home to have a dark, modern luxe feel. More than that, the husband has a passion for sound systems and was looking to have good acoustics in the living room so that they would be able to enjoy the best audio and visual experience possible. Over three months, Plush Interior Design achieved this and more.

good acoustics at home

“What we did was to plan everything out carefully with accurate dimensions,” explains Chris Zhang, the design director of Plush Interior Design. Aside from the speakers facing the sofa, more speakers were hung from the ceiling to surround the seating area to achieve the good acoustics that was desired. The team also picked blackout curtains that would ensure the best viewing experience.

Next to the living area is a cosy dining zone with statement lighting. Chris enhanced the sense of space here by installing half-height windows to separate the dining area from the kitchen.

In addition to opening the space visually, the bi-fold windows and door are a practical solution that gives the homeowners the option to close off the kitchen whenever they do heavy cooking. Here, there is full use of the space with upper and bottom cabinets finished in warm wood laminates.

The dark palette continues into the master bathroom. Stone tiles add visual texture to the space, but it is also the consistent use of greys that give it a cosy, upscale look.

Warm grey is also a colour that promotes a restful ambience. Chris has incorporated this hue by way of fabric-like wallpaper on one wall and light grey to complement the sandy hues of the soft furnishings and upholstered headboard. Cove lighting on the ceiling and feature wall adds depth to the space too.
