Every space presents its unique set of challenges, no matter the size. This bungalow, for instance, spans 9,000sqft across its two floors and attic, and is home to a couple and their extended family. Working on a space like this means ensuring that it feels open yet scaled down for a sense of comfort. So, when Dots N Tots Interior took on the project, the plan was for a modern and timeless feel for the home. Another central design idea was to imbue it with earthy colours and natural patterns to yield a cosy vibe.

The design team narrowed down the material palette to four laminate and four tile designs throughout the home. “One of the challenges was in using four laminates while meeting the need to create a surprise element on every floor,” says designer Liew Yew Lian.

In the living area, the team matched a palette of warm woodgrain laminates with decorative floor tiles. A large black sofa complements the surfaces and soft furnishings. A pillar is also clad in brown tinted mirror and wrapped with a bench that would come in handy when the family entertains. The result is a welcoming space perfect for relaxing with the family or entertaining guests.

In both the dry kitchen and dining area, walls are decked out in textured grey paint. This neutral hue complements the woodgrain and dark grey laminates in the dry kitchen. While functional, it is not without style. Clustered lighting jazzes up the area.

To get to the upper floor, one would have to head to a large and airy foyer. In contrast to the other spaces, this area features a bright and light palette. The light-coloured tiles and walls ensure that the staircases, dressed in luxurious wood tones, come to the fore as the star of the space.

Upstairs, woodgrain flooring offer up a homely yet luxurious feel. The spacious bedrooms feature a dark palette with wood and black surfaces. As for the bathrooms, the design team adopted the same materials but gave each a different touch.

The bungalow comes with a roomy attic, now designated as an entertainment room. The modern space is reminiscent of interiors in the classic Mad Men television series with leather furniture, button-tufted wingback armchair and matching brown walls.

Working with a budget of $350,000, Dots ‘N’ Tots Interior focused on materiality for a consistent and sophisticated ambience. Woodgrains, natural patterns and dark finishes provide a solid foundation, freeing the design team to explore personalised design for each space in this expansive bungalow.
