IKEA Jurong opens at Jem: See the highlights and opening specials

Text by Janice Seow

Opening its doors on Thursday 29 April 2021, IKEA Jurong, IKEA’s third store in Singapore, covers 6,500 square metres of retail space across three levels at Jem shopping centre.

It may be small relative to IKEA’s other standalone stores in Singapore (Alexandra is 20,000sqm and Tampines 37,000sqm), but Jaap Doornbos, IKEA’s retail director for Singapore and Vietnam said at a media preview that IKEA Jurong is “a small store with big ambitions”, describing how it’ll be a testing ground for different customer experiences. Customers can also still browse over 2,500 home furnishing products, and experience 12 room settings, 16 vignettes and 2 homes depicting common living situations in Singapore.

It’s a departure from IKEA’s other mono-store operations in Singapore. Check out what’s different at IKEA Jurong.

Digital experiences

Ikea Jurong

There are one-stop kiosks where customers can access a variety of information, check the prices of items by scanning their barcodes, and even provide feedback.

Ikea Jurong

There’s also no fear of getting lost since these kiosks include digital wayfinding. On that note, we have to say that we also like how customers can enter and exit the store from any floor…

Ikea Jurong

Beam projections on furniture with instructions and information help customers to better discover all the interesting features of a product.

Ikea Jurong

Need help from staff? IKEA Jurong has one planning station at each level, and six roving staff with mobile systems on each of the different floors to assist customers with their product queries.

No warehouse

Ikea Jurong

Since it’s in a mall, shopping at IKEA Jurong is rather like being at a department store. It may not have a built-in warehouse, but customers will still be able to buy the full range.

Cashless and carry

Ikea Jurong

Payment at IKEA Jurong is cashless only. While many home furnishing products are available for immediate payment and carry, larger items can be home delivered.

There are separate check-out areas on each floor, with screens that display the number of people in the queue at every level’s check-out so bottlenecks can be avoided.

Click and collect your food orders

Ikea Jurong

Great for those who don’t want to wait, Jurong IKEA offers a Click & Collect ordering service for selected items at the restaurant. Customers can place orders via a QR code that will direct them to an online menu. They receive a pick up alert once the order is ready for collection.

Something for the kids

Ikea Jurong

There may be no playground area at IKEA Jurong, but the interactive wall at its restaurant will be sure to keep the little ones entertained as you rest up from all that shopping. To colour the digital drawing, simply wave your hands across.
