A Scandinavian-inspired home with open spaces

According to Lucas Yang of Archive Design, the homeowners of this 4-room HDB flat desired a spacious and airy home. To meet this request, the designer removed most of the non-structural walls.

Notably, the chevron patterned feature – handmade by Archive Design carpenters – hides the bomb shelter. Lucas explains: “The owners wished to keep the bomb shelter hidden from view, especially given that it sits next to the dining area where they love spending time in. So we made it into a design centrepiece.”

The chevron patterned feature not only adds textural interest to the space, but also integrates storage space for shoes and other items.

The homeowners do only light cooking and frequently have friends and family over. Lucas has therefore designed an open-concept L-shaped kitchen that transitions seamlessly into the dining area which serves as the central communal space. The open layout also allows the couple to keep an eye on their cats.
