Self-indulgence can go overboard when it comes to designing a home for yourself to enjoy But, in the case of this swanky resale flat, it was all about mastery of design, materials and the thoughtfulness to create interesting features for the home.

The brief to Dots N Tots Interior was to keep the flat modern and purposeful, while keeping in mind the homeowner’s pursuits and collectibles. In this instance, the homeowner wanted a feature wall fitted with a shelf in the living room to showcase some of his prized toys and decorative accoutrements. That was his only requirement while the rest of the brief was carte blanche.

A welcoming open-plan living and dining room where dark wood shelving and cabinetry complement the marble table and gilded ‘ring’ lights that dominate this space. The feature wall takes centre stage along the long white wall and allows the homeowner’s collection of toys and other prized keepsakes to be displayed, adding character to this space.

The innovative alcove lighting on the false ceiling is asymmetrical but adds an interesting counterpoint to the living room. Even the backlight from the TV creates an inviting warmth for the homeowner to indulge in some ‘me time’.

The shelving for the feature wall stands out because it’s not the linear design we normally associate with shelves. There are trapezium shapes that create functional nooks for the homeowner to store or display things. The floor-to-ceiling structure even has a back panel that accommodates the TV to hang optimally for the best viewing height if one is seated on the sofa.

A unique false wall designed with a bias-cut holds the large-screen TV in the bedroom. It even has cubby holes at the top to hold possessions. The false wall also offers a backlit alcove lighting – designed like a Z shape – which helps to create warmth while adding a futuristic touch.

The kitchen is kept to a simple design – linear and contemporary lines. It offers plenty of storage to hide kitchen utensils while providing space for heating appliances to allow the homeowner to cook his meal. The cabinets’ fascia of dark wood and soft grey blend beautifully for a timeless look.
