Contemporary style loft-duplex apartment for refined living

Owned by a couple in their 30s, this spacious two-storey loft-duplex apartment is a study in refined, contemporary style living with a well-balanced design that is both elegant and comfortable.

“The clients asked for sufficient storage space and an uncluttered, contemporary home. They also wanted to minimise heat from the western sun that comes into the living area through the double volume glass window,” shares Stephen Goh of Metaphor Studio.

Automated blinds on the double volume window shields off the living area from the harsh western sun. At the same time, reflections from daylight and indoor lighting onto the 3D effect silk wall covering offer up a variety of sensual moods.

A common design vocabulary makes for a beautifully unified space; a handful of selective materials are applied consistently throughout the different areas, and layered in well-controlled proportions. At the same time, the double volume space is designed with thought to the spatial experience. “We employed a feature ‘lintel’ in black tinted stainless steel finish. This acts as a ‘datum’ to heighten the volumetric space above without compromising the luxury of the lower volume,” Stephen explains.

A play of reflections can be observed on the black tinted mirrored wall feature when one moves from the living room to the dining area and entertainment zone.

With the wall to the former study removed, this newly converted entertainment space remains intimate – with laminated wood panelling overhead – whilst enjoying a heightened connection to the other communal zones.

“This ‘shared’ space is designed to cater to different visual and audio entertainment experiences, with the technical requirements for one not causing interference to the other,” says Stephen. “We’ve designed a ‘shared’ tiled column that not only serves as a backdrop feature, but also conceals all the cabling management,” he continues.

The same material composition is applied to the upper floor master bedroom, maintaining a seamless dialogue between both levels. Notably, the laminated wood feature clads the column and ceiling to create a cosy sanctuary for relaxation.

Instilling warmth whilst ensuring spaces are well cohered can be a challenge in large apartments. In this contemporary style home however, Metaphor Studio has managed it with aplomb.
