Boho curves and Moroccan soul

description

A blank canvas can be both an opportunity and a challenge. When Zee Sham, Senior Interior Designer at Reborn Interior, first stepped into this HDB flat in Jurong West, the worn-out unit had been handed over in its original condition with almost nothing worth keeping. Rather than seeing limitation, Zee saw freedom.

The brief from the homeowner, a construction site supervisor who loves singing and values time with his family, was refreshingly open. “The initial brief was minimal — the clients entrusted me fully with material selection,” says Zee. The only starting point was a set of hand-carved wood pieces imported from Bali. “The rest of the design required extensive research to ensure the overall theme was cohesive and well-executed.”

The shared living and dining zones set the tone for the whole home. A sweeping false ceiling, trimmed with amber-toned cove lighting, immediately draws the eye upward. “I generally avoid symmetrical designs and prefer creating elements that feel spontaneous yet still serve a functional purpose,” explains Zee.

“Although the ceiling takes on an organic, random form, it effectively conceals the wiring too,” she adds. Recliner sofas face the rock stone TV feature wall, which was originally envisioned as a dome inspired by mosque architecture. However, when the 100-inch TV proved too large for the curved structure, the design was revised into a curvilinear form instead.

Next to the living area, a hallway lined with arched bedroom openings leads the eye deeper into the home. Dome-like frames punctuate the sandy walls in a rhythm that feels almost medina-like, while Arabic calligraphy wall art and a woven wall piece add quiet personal touches.

The kitchen is perhaps the most joyful room in the home. A curved peninsula island anchors the space with a rounded edge that softens what could have been a purely functional layout, its forest green finish flowing seamlessly into the rest of the cabinetry.

Deep green lower cabinets paired with warm timber-look overhead cabinets and brass hardware from Excel give the space a richness that most HDB kitchens rarely achieve. The backsplash is tiled in patchwork Moroccan-style tiles, their blue, grey, and cream geometric patterns repeating across the full length of the wall.

Everything in the master bedroom returns to a single focal point: a large Bali wood carving mounted behind the bed, backlit to cast intricate lacework shadows across the terracotta-hued walls. The effect is nothing short of theatrical. Recessed niches with warm uplighting flank the bed in place of conventional bedside tables, keeping the composition clean and intentional.

A full-height wardrobe with textured woven panel doors divides the bedroom into two zones. Beyond it, a built-in console with dark timber-effect cabinet doors sits against the same burnt orange-hued walls, with corner shelves for personal objects. Arched ribbed glass doors open into the master bathroom, the curved motif carried through one final time.

Not every room needs to follow the same story. In the children’s bedroom, a safari concept takes over, anchored by a custom mural designed by Zee herself, giving the room a dreamy storybook atmosphere.

The bathrooms carry the home’s rich and layered aesthetic all the way through. The master bathroom features a vessel sink cast in natural stone and a colourful backsplash clad in richly patterned, Moroccan-inspired tiles.

Despite its compact footprint, the common bathroom in the kitchen feels more open than expected. Curved accents, such as the arched entrance and rounded sink counter, soften the tight edges. Warm recessed lighting running along the patterned tiled backsplash introduces a gentle glow that lends the space a boutique-hotel feel.

For this family of three adults and two children, Zee and her Reborn Interior team completed the renovation in just two months for $128,000. The result is a home that feels genuinely transportive and entirely its own.
