Time seems to stand still in this cosy and inviting two-room flat in Bukit Batok, home to a young lady and her cat. Despite its compact size of under 600 square feet, the designers at Darwin Interior managed to craft a breezy and spacious sanctuary. They explain: “Her vision was a bright, airy space, seamlessly blending wabi-sabi aesthetics with rustic elements.”

For this 10-week renovation, completed on a budget of $37,000, , the team understood that creating a bright, open atmosphere required strategic changes. By removing the wall between the living area and the bedroom, they seamlessly integrated the two spaces, instantly enhancing the home with a spacious and airy ambience.

To address the homeowner’s need for privacy, the team installed curtains to separate the sleeping area from the communal space. These curtains not only provide a visual barrier but also help to block light and reduce noise, creating a serene environment ideal for restful sleep.

To enhance the rustic minimalist aesthetic, most of the walls were coated in limewash, lending a textured, earthy charm. The designers also focused on thoughtful details, incorporating curved accents into the walls and custom-built furnishings. They explained, “The homeowner requested minimal sharp edges to create a softer, more soothing atmosphere.”

A curved corner elegantly defines the dining area, complemented by a rounded dining table that mirrors the wall’s curvature. This thoughtful design creates a cosy and inviting space, perfect for the homeowner to host intimate gatherings and enjoy warm, convivial moments at home.

Despite its narrow size, the kitchen is thoughtfully designed and fully equipped with modern amenities for cooking and laundry. Every inch of space has been optimised, with the team even incorporating a pantry area and a slim console table for added functionality.

Defined by a green-painted accent wall, the master bedroom embraces an earthy colour palette designed to promote relaxation and tranquility. Adding visual interest, the room features organic shapes, evident in the design of the side table and the hanging lamp, which enhance its natural and harmonious aesthetic.

At the homeowner’s request for a bathtub, the bathroom underwent a significant transformation. The designers explained: “We completely reconfigured the layout, relocating the basin, shower stall, and even the entrance to accommodate the new design.”

The renovation has transformed the bathroom into a serene, spa-like sanctuary. Featuring nature-inspired textures like stone and wood finishes, the space radiates calm and allows the homeowner to unwind completely, complementing the soothing vibe of the rest of her home.
