A smart home with seamless storage and hidden rooms

description

One cabinet with multiple uses, and spaces with unconventional ‘hidden’ features. This was the approach taken by Design Director Samuel Teo from d’Phenomenal to fulfil the homeowners’ design brief for a minimalist and highly functional smart home. He says: “They wanted to conceal storage and doors to the rooms to achieve a clean, clutter-free, and organised environment.”

For the four-week renovation done at a cost of $40,000, Samuel designed a multifunctional cabinet that extended from the front entrance to the communal zones. It offers many uses, housing shoe storage, a settee, and a little niche to park the robot vacuum cleaner near the entrance.

Closer to the living and dining areas, the elongated cabinet offers storage, display showcases, and a TV console to accommodate a 55-inch TV screen. “We managed to fit bulky items like the mahjong table and luggage here,” Samuel notes.

Two laminate designs from Lamitak are used on the cabinet for a brilliant colour contrast. Samuel added a flowing curved detail and explains: “The curved design symbolises a smooth journey for the homeowners. It’s all about inviting positive energy into their daily lives.”

This feature also hides a bigger surprise: entrances to the common bathroom and one bedroom. Besides providing another layer of privacy for the homeowners while they are in the rooms, having the doorways concealed maintains the design cohesion of the curved accents.

Another highlight of the condo is its smart features. Samuel says: “We incorporated smart home technology where the homeowners can use their smartphones to control the automated lights, curtains, and air-conditioning whether they are home or out.” Most of all, they can set different scenes with dimming LED lights to create a warm and intimate mood, or a bright and welcoming one.

Should the homeowners be in the mood to entertain friends, they have a chic and well-equipped kitchen to host in style. Boosting the kitchen’s functionality is a glass sliding door to prevent heavy cooking smells from wafting into the living area. The peninsula counter is also decked in hardwearing sintered stone from Aurastone.

“We wanted more countertop space for food preparation, therefore the peninsula counter is a welcomed addition,” says Samuel. The dishwasher is neatly positioned underneath it for convenience.

With these cleverly hidden measures, Samuel has created a sense of intrigue with secret doors and storage that keep this minimalist home looking seamless.
