With just seven weeks to complete this Jurong flat’s comprehensive overhaul, Design Director Samuel Teo and Interior Designer Choon Hian from d’Phenomenal were determined to realise their clients’ dream. The homeowners, parents to two energetic children, envisioned a modern minimalist space that exuded luxury. They required extensive storage solutions, a highly functional kitchen with ample countertop space, and enhanced natural light. Samuel and Choon Hian tackled these demands head-on, ensuring every detail met the family’s needs and lifestyle.
They incorporated ample storage in the living area through an integrated TV console that cleverly extends into the entryway, doubling as a settee and shoe cabinet. “This maximises every inch of space while maintaining a clean, uncluttered look,” they explain.
The extended design of the TV console visually enlarges the space and creates a seamless flow from the entrance to the living area. It also addresses the spatial challenge posed by the flat’s odd triangular layout, connecting the living and dining areas without making them feel cramped.
Removing the wall to the service yard has dramatically opened up the kitchen, inviting an abundance of daylight to brighten the entire area. To maximise storage and workspace, the area now features two generous rows of countertops and overhead cabinets.
The kitchen shines with traceless laminates from Admira and these anti-fingerprint and antimicrobial finishes offer added convenience. The material was chosen to fulfill the homeowners’ request for a sleek, easy-to-maintain aesthetic, ensuring the space remains pristine and stylish with minimal effort.
While the design of the communal areas was paramount, personal spaces such as the master bedroom and bathrooms were also given special attention to match the overall aesthetic while providing comfort and privacy.
When designing the generous custom-built storage in the compact master bedroom, Samuel and Choon Hian made sure the cabinets and wardrobes would open smoothly without hitting any obstacles. “We meticulously planned several iterations before finalising the layout and carpentry specifics. This precise execution of measurements minimised any potential mishaps and delays,” they explain.
In the common bathroom, marble-patterned tiles bring in a touch of modern elegance. The striking accent wall and glass divider also stylishly delineate the shower stall from the dry area.
With an eye for detail and a commitment to functionality, Samuel and Choon Hian have demonstrated that with the right design approach, even flats of modest size can be turned into luxurious, inviting homes.
