The owners of this five-room BTO flat are a young couple and self-described homebodies who enjoy spending time at home when they are not working. For this unit’s design, the pair wanted a space that was modern with lots of neutral tones, and with a general feeling of warmth throughout.
Reflecting on the renovation journey, interior designer Benedict Tan from Inizio Atelier shares: “The clients kept the communication really open and were also very receptive to our proposed ideas.”
The decision was made to maintain the integrity of the unit’s layout and keep all walls intact to cater for the possibility of future family expansion. The design intent thus became to use similar and complementary soothing shades and finishes as well as lighting to achieve the desired cosy atmosphere.
“We used carefully selected paint colours and a combination of different shades of wood to create a space that was both elegant and serene,” says the designer.
The home is minimalist and furnished with pieces of furniture that bring comfort whilst blending in beautifully with the tranquil and cosy interior. At the same time, the use of space has been well-considered so it feels spacious and airy, and the simple aesthetics bring greater attention to the striking curved settee feature in the living area finished with a textured chevron painting effect.
Lighting effects have an important role to play here, imbuing the space with warmth, and serving to highlight features around the home, such as the curved feature wall and false ceiling in the living area, display shelves next to the dining zone, and the kitchen cabinetry.
In the kitchen, the marble-patterned countertop contrasts against dark woodgrain and off-white surfaces, standing out within the open-plan layout whilst being complementary to the softer wood tones in the living area.
The gentle palette continues in the private spaces, though turning moodier in the bathroom with dark grey large format tiles to achieve a more intimate atmosphere.
This couple’s new forever home was completed at a renovation cost of $83,000. It warmly embraces and is the definition of modern comfort, with room to adapt as the family grows.
