The thoughtful design of this 1,367-square-foot condo by Clifford See and Cheung Yu Ting of LAR+D (Local Architecture Research + Design) exemplifies how design can seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics. Reimagined for a young couple and their cat, the home is a harmonious interplay of textures, materials, and spaces, tailored to meet both practical needs and a sophisticated aesthetic vision.
Upon entering the unit through the private lift, one is immediately met with a dimly lit foyer featuring a striking dark green textured wall and a lattice screen. This carefully crafted buffer serves as both a spatial and visual divider between the entryway and the open-plan living and dining areas beyond, creating a gentle transition from the outside world to the private sanctuary within.
The design brief called for clear zoning, with solutions to maintain privacy and fluidity within the open-plan layout. One such innovation is the use of bi-fold windows and timber panels, which can seamlessly partition the adjacent kitchen, powder room, and guest bedroom when needed, or be opened when required. The concealed entrance to the guest bedroom, subtly integrated into a timber-panelled wall, is an especially clever response to the couple’s concern about disruptions while watching TV.
Throughout the home, the interplay of materials and textures creates a unified aesthetic. A palette of moss greens and emerald tones runs consistently across the interiors, complemented by warm timber accents, frosted glass, and textured surfaces. The original marble flooring in the living and dining areas was retained, providing a luxurious foundation that balances the natural, tactile finishes of the walls and cabinetry.
The spatial organisation is another standout feature, with a framed corridor acting as a subtle yet functional transition between communal and private areas. This corridor, adorned with a combination of timber panelling and a vaulted ceiling, draws the eye inward while maintaining a sense of intimacy.
The master suite is tucked away in the furthest corner of the home, following a linear progression from the wardrobe to the bathroom and finally to the bedroom. The bathroom itself features a lattice door with frosted glass, ensuring privacy while allowing natural light to filter through – a perfect example of the thoughtful design ethos that pervades the home.
Attention to detail extends even to the choice of fixtures and finishes sourced from brands like Toto, Sol Luminaire, and Hafary. Each element has been meticulously selected to contribute to the home’s refined yet understated aesthetic. Textured tiles, matte laminate finishes, and custom-built cabinetry work in concert to enhance the overall design.
One particularly charming touch is the incorporation of the couple’s feline companion into the design. A cat flap integrated into the kitchen door is both practical and playful, a small but thoughtful nod to the pet’s presence in the household.
Ultimately, this condo is a masterclass in balancing aesthetics and functionality, achieving a dynamic yet harmonious flow throughout. Clifford and Yu Ting have delivered a home that not only meets their clients’ specific needs but also elevates the everyday living experience.
