In this five-room flat, Linear Space Concepts puts a fresh spin to heritage style by weaving in modern touches.

A style born in this region and loved by many for its unique heritage, the Peranakan style brings together Chinese, Malay and European elements. Distinct and vibrant, it celebrates colours and patterns. “The homeowner appreciates culture and heritage, and loves the concept of Peranakan style,” says Marc Wong, the creative director of Linear Space Concepts. “She also has a collection of glassware and cutlery, and enjoys baking and cooking.”
In a span of about three months, Marc and his team worked on transforming this five-room HDB flat for the homeowner. Laminates with bold woodgrains ground the space and bring to mind the structures of the olden days.
The highlight of the living area is the slatted display unit, where the homeowner can store and showcase keepsakes and collectables. “The Oriental-style grilles are customised and sprayed in a metallic finish for a mix of modern and heritage,” Marc explains. The lines are echoed in the trimmings on the kitchen cabinets in the spacious dry kitchen fronted by a peninsula counter. He also introduced vibrant green via the laminates for the kitchen and design features.
The design team placed the ovens in the dry kitchen, and it’s where the homeowner also stores her kitchenware and baking supplies. Complementing the Peranakan-style details with clean lines and geometric shapes refreshes the look.
Elaborate door designs are a key element in Peranakan-style interiors and Marc spared no detail. Like the balcony with its customised black-framed folding doors and Peranakan tiles, the wet kitchen too sees a customised design. The folding door consists of textured glass, wood-look laminates and tiles to solidify the Peranakan look.
The team converted the study area into the dining zone to make the shared spaces as free-flowing as possible.
Peranakan tiles, which the team sourced in Chinatown, have been incorporated into the entire home for consistency. In the bathrooms, floor and wall tiles with a natural stone finish provide a soft contrast against the lively patterns.
