Tropical oasis within a semi-detached house

From a run-down 35-year-old house to a fully refreshed modern resort-style dwelling, this two-storey landed home was completely transformed by Norman Lim of design firm Asialand ID. Taking inspiration from its surroundings, he conceptualised a nature-inspired theme that capitalises on the verdant views and abundant daylight. Styled after a modern resort, the living room features high ceilings and walls sporting special effects paint.

Big on hosting guests, the homeowners, a married couple with one son, wanted their kitchen to be integrated with the rest of the communal zones for easy entertaining.  The newly revamped cookspace now has an open-concept configuration, and impressive features like a Cosentino Senza Orinoco granite island counter and 100kg pure Swarovski pendant lights.

Light pours in through the skylight above the spiral staircase. Norman paid attention that the stairwell, typically a dim area, would feel welcoming. Also, a significant material used to create the modern resort look is hand-cut Burmese wood strips. They are laid with tongue-and-groove joints on the roof and ceiling – a warmth-imbuing touch that makes for a stylish look.

There were special considerations while building the water features such as the lap pool and Jacuzzi. The homeowners’ son loves to swim but they were concerned about the addition of chlorine. For a healthier alternative, the pool is filled with salt water. Norman adds: “Glass panel doors at the dining area, when opened, allows for the blending of indoor and outdoor areas.”
