This four-room BTO flat by design firm OVON demonstrates how thoughtful restraint can create a home that feels practical without losing personality. Designed for a young couple and their baby, the unit balances everyday functionality with a warm mid-century modern sensibility, resulting in a space that feels bright, adaptable and calmly expressive.
The homeowners, both drawn to colour and art, envisioned a home with a timeless foundation that could evolve alongside their family. Rather than committing to bold permanent finishes, they sought a neutral backdrop that would allow furniture, décor and collected objects to bring character into the space over time. At the same time, the design needed to support the realities of life with a young child: practical planning, efficient storage and spaces flexible enough for play, rest and routine.
Responding to this brief, OVON shaped the home around an understated palette. The living and dining areas are kept visually restrained, with soft neutral surfaces creating a quiet canvas for colourful furnishings and personal accents. This allows the interior to feel cohesive and enduring, with freedom to refresh the home’s personality through moveable pieces rather than fixed design elements.
“The family enjoys capturing memories together, which influenced the way spaces were designed to feel bright, open, and photogenic,” explains OVON’s designer Simon Chin.
One of the most significant interventions took place in the kitchen. Originally conceived as an open-plan space, it was enclosed to better support the lady homeowner’s love of cooking and to provide a more practical environment for food preparation. Rather than sacrificing openness entirely, the design introduces a glass partition in place of a solid wall, preserving brightness and visual connection between the kitchen and living area.
While practical in layout and highly functional for everyday use, the kitchen is also where the design’s playful personality comes through most clearly. “Kitchen detailing, particularly the playful yet intentional mix of circular recessed handles, coloured accents, and textured backsplash grout lines in orange, lend the cabinetry a soft, graphic quality,” says Simon.
Elsewhere, clever detailing helps transform utilitarian elements into integrated design moments. The household shelter, often a visual interruption in many HDB flats, is concealed behind a full-height mirror. Beyond disguising the shelter’s entryway, the mirrored surface amplifies natural light and visually expands the living area. It has also become an unexpectedly meaningful feature – serving as a spontaneous backdrop for everyday family photographs.
In the private areas of the home, the atmosphere shifts towards calm and softness. Bedrooms are designed to feel restful and understated, carrying through the same neutral palette but with a quieter, more intimate sensibility suited to retreat and rest. The result is a subtle zoning of mood throughout the unit, with public spaces feeling bright and social while private rooms offer greater calm.
Completed in just 10 weeks, the home reflects a disciplined design approach – one that prioritises longevity, flexibility and comfort over trend-driven statements. Through measured interventions and carefully considered detailing, OVON has created a family home that feels practical for the present yet adaptable for the future.
