Turning up the colour at Kebun Baru

description

In this 860-square-foot Kebun Baru Edge BTO, colour isn’t treated as an afterthought — it sets the tone for the entire home. Designed by Thiang Wei Zheng of Ascend Design, the four-room flat reflects homeowners who love expressive interiors and wanted something joyful, distinctive and unmistakably personal.

As the designer explains, “For them, colour is more than an aesthetic choice — it is emotional.” That conviction shaped the project from the earliest planning stages. Because the homeowners were not planning for children in the foreseeable future, they were keen to fully embrace an open-plan layout that better supported both daily living and frequent hosting. One bedroom was demolished to expand the communal zone, while the service yard was absorbed into the kitchen, creating a more generous and connected social core.

With the spatial envelope enlarged, the design strategy focused on balancing boldness with control. The homeowners gravitated strongly towards blue, green and red, which became the guiding tones throughout the home. As Wei Zheng notes, “Having this clarity from the outset allowed us to confidently shape a scheme that felt cohesive yet characterful.”

The kitchen establishes the visual language immediately. A green-and-white checkered floor defines the foyer and cooking zone, but instead of ending in a rigid straight line, the boundary curves into a soft asymmetrical edge — a subtle intervention that introduces movement and prevents the graphic pattern from feeling static. Surrounding carpentry is deliberately restrained through clean colour blocking, allowing the floor to remain the focal point while playful cut-out handles quietly soften the geometry.

Material contrasts further enrich the space. Stainless steel surfaces meet mosaic tiles in what the designer describes as “a tactile dialogue between industrial sleekness and handcrafted texture.” Nearby, a structural wall clad in yellow mosaic links the living and dining areas, echoing the kitchen backsplash and helping the open-plan layout feel visually connected rather than loosely arranged.

Furniture selections act as grounding elements within the energetic palette. A deep brown sofa anchors the living room against seamless cream-toned flooring, while the customised stained-wood dining table and bench introduce warmth into the social zone.

The master bedroom intentionally shifts towards a calmer mood, where a dominant blue backdrop creates a cocooning retreat while still maintaining the home’s graphic identity.

Even the bathrooms lean fully into the concept. The master bathroom wraps its dry zones in a rich burnt orange for an enveloping atmosphere, while the common bathroom pairs wine red with pastel blue tiles in a lively, checkered composition.

The result is a home that proves expressive colour doesn’t have to feel chaotic. Through careful spatial planning, disciplined carpentry and thoughtful material contrasts, this Kebun Baru flat delivers personality with precision — playful, confident and entirely its own.
