Home Type: 4-bedroom HDB maisonette

Floor Area: 1,400 sqft

Many of us can agree that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where the family gathers, whether to cook or consume food. With that said, it’s disheartening to see that homes in Singapore seem to have increasingly smaller kitchens. Newer condo apartments and HDB flats have tiny kitchens that have barely enough space to fit all cooking appliances.

In this four-bedroom HDB maisonette however, the kitchen has been redesigned to be the star of the home. Boutique interior design studio Artistroom understands the role the kitchen plays in this family home, and went out of its way to accommodate a spacious and sensible layout that’s conducive to the homeowners’ daily needs.

Taking inspiration from European standards, the original layout of the kitchen was reconfigured to make way for a larger cook space. An island counter was added to provide more countertop and storage space for the family. Topped with marble-like quartz and solid wood, the island counter is further extended to become a breakfast counter that also functions as a casual dining spot. Overhead cabinets are clad in white, allowing the kitchen to maintain its spacious feel.

With a newly opened and spacious kitchen, Artistroom designed black metal frames to segregate the space from the rest of the home. Clear glass sliding doors can close off the kitchen to contain any cooking fumes and smells.

The kitchen isn’t the only space that has received a total makeover. The living quarters on the first floor of this two-storey maisonette continues with the use of a muted colour palette with highly contrasting outlines. Sliding panels behind the TV wall conceal a small study room used by the homeowner to do his work. While having a small study nook helps to maximise the space available, sliding doors allow this space and any clutter to be easily hidden when guests visit. Painted groove lines on the TV wall and the sliding doors are maintained throughout the entire house, even in the kitchen and on the second floor, creating a cohesive look throughout this home.
