The colour on your walls might look good – but what if it’s silently harming your health?

Formaldehyde might not be visible, but it’s a substance worth paying attention to. Commonly found in building materials and paint, this volatile organic compound (VOC) can contribute to indoor air pollution — especially in newly renovated spaces where ventilation may be limited. While most people won’t experience serious health issues, some may notice mild symptoms such as eye or throat irritation, dizziness, or skin sensitivity when exposed to elevated levels over time. In rare cases, more serious reactions have been reported, particularly among those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or allergies.
What makes formaldehyde a concern is how easily it can go unnoticed. It’s often present in paints, adhesives, and certain types of engineered wood, and continues to “off-gas” — or release VOCs — into the air long after application. This process can last for days or even weeks depending on the material, which means that indoor air quality may be affected well beyond the renovation phase.
The good news is, we now have safer alternatives – and with Singapore set to ban formaldehyde in paints used for building interiors starting January 2026, the shift to non-toxic options is no longer just a nice-to-have. It’s a smart, future-ready move.
Here are four non-toxic paint brands available in Singapore that combine wellness with performance:
A go-to for the eco-conscious, Eco Spec is zero-VOC and zero-emission, making it ideal for nurseries, bedrooms, and any space where clean air is a priority. It delivers great coverage and comes in a beautiful range of finishes.
Homegrown and proud, Raffles Paint’s R.ONE is Singapore’s first 2-in-1 paint and primer with advanced washability. It is non-toxic, low-odour, and built for high-traffic spaces that need extra resilience.
Local brand Gush takes it a step further with air-purifying paint that actively breaks down indoor pollutants, including VOCs. It also eliminates bacteria, controls mould, and is certified non-toxic – perfect for wellness-driven homes.
Dulux Ambiance All AirClean by AkzoNobel is a zero-VOC paint that does more than beautify. Infused with PureAir Technology, it helps absorb pollutants like formaldehyde while offering anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-mould protection. With over 2,000 colours, it’s a stylish way to create a healthier home.
