Upsizing a modern industrial studio apartment

The designers from Prozfile turned this small but lofty home into a cosy and engaging living space with warehouse-inspired textures and strong architectural details.

To play up the apartment’s 4.7-metre ceiling height, the designers outlined the space with a mild steel powder coated frame depicting a pitched roof. This forms the centrepiece of the home and the house-shaped framework is flanked by two different wall textures: a pallet wood patterned laminate covering on one side, and white brick on the other. At the far end of the apartment, a cosy chill-out nook sits by the balcony and on a raised platform.

Building a mezzanine in this studio apartment was integral to maximising the vertical height of this home. “This allows the homeowner to have her own reading nook,” says the design team. The library loft can be accessed with a metal rolling ladder. With meticulous space planning executed for the tight and narrow layout, the team managed to carve out well-functioning living and dining zones to complement the homeowner’s lifestyle needs.

The homeowner’s collection of books is housed in the loft’s custom-designed bookcase. The designers say: “We didn’t want a regular-looking bookshelf so used playful motifs to create an organic and fun design.” An industrial-themed material palette of I-beams and wire mesh for the flooring also adds character to the space.

Enveloping the library loft is a staircase which leads to the only bedroom. Through the use of similar colour schemes and materials, a uniformed design order is established in the studio apartment from top to bottom. “Having a cohesive design flow is important because with such a small unit, we didn’t want to overwhelm the look with too many design details,” the designers explain.

This apartment sits on the top-most floor of the condominium building, and as such, the bedroom has a pitched ceiling. This adds definition to the ongoing modern industrial theme. The same white brick wall on the lower level makes an appearance as an understated-looking feature wall in this bedroom. Another design highlight is the fact that the bed rests on pine wood pallets, bringing an edgy, industrial vibe to the room.
